Make up artist are almost as bad. Have your manicure and pedicure done the day before… also make sure to exfoliate your face the day before. You make up artist should have told you this. Do a full body exfoliation if you can the day before it will leave you glowing for you wedding day. Make sure if you have never exfoliated before that you do it at least a month ahead of time in case your skin is ultra sensitive and it makes your break out. That way you know whether you’ll have a bad reaction.

#2 Meeting your fiancé ahead of time. I know that this is a very sensitive subject for many of you. I know that you want him to see you walking down the isle for the first time. So.. Seeing him or not seeing him? That is the question? Like everything involving your wedding, this is a very personal decision, which means it weighs entirely on your individual preferences. There is no pressure one way or the other. I believe that we can make the meeting just as special if not more by having you meet ahead of time. We can capture the moment with the perfect romantic setting and lighting. We can set up a scenario where you meet that adds another moment of mystique and wonder to your beautiful day. Also, having this time to be together can help diminish the stresses of the day. You guys can focus on what’s really important, as opposed to the many details that must fall into place. As a result, your love for one another takes center stage. And this can happen no matter what the setting. It definitely comes across in the photographs.

#3 Getting ready at the same hotel. This one is a biggie for me. I love to tell the whole story and sometimes because the bride and groom are getting ready at such for away locations I can then, only tell one side of the story with depth. If you guys book a room the night before you can each wake up relaxed and refreshed and ready to start your getting ready process. Plus I can shoot both of you getting ready. I can tell your story and well as his. Choose a beautiful hotel that has a garden area or beautiful lobby where I can take your down to shoot your pictures of you alone, you with your parents and also with your girls! Then I can do the same for him! Plus I can use the location to shoot your wedding dress, shoes and accessories. It’s much better than shooting in a home that’s messy with wedding chaos or a backyard. One last thing ...usually hotel rooms have big windows that allow in more natural light which translates to softer, prettier pictures as you guys get ready!

#4 Schedule some time for sunset pictures. The most beautiful, most magical time of the date is sunset or sunrise I call it “The sweet spot.” I know that most of you are not morning people. So if you can... try to schedule a little time for your and your loved one to get away for some sunset pictures. Skin is creamier, softer and more beautiful. The light is warn and there are less harsh shadows. So if you can do it schedule about 20 minutes outside of our regularly scheduled picture time for some sunset pictures. As you can see in the photo on the bottom left the sun is still very high up in the sky, the shadows are dark especially under the eyes.. But the rest of the photos are soft and warm, much more flattering.

#5 Well lit reception. Now this tip is one that many brides don’t put much thought into and I think in makes all the difference in the world in regards to your reception images. You see... a camera doesn't see the same things that the human eye sees. You may think when you walk in to a reception area that is lit with just the standard light that it looks bright enough, but have you ever noticed when you take a picture indoors usually all you see is the peoples faces and black in the background. Well, we “drag the shutter” which means that the camera will try to capture as much light as possible from the background but if there is little light then the camera is going to capture black. But if you use twinkle lights and candles (lots of them) and as much lighting directed towards tables and walls then the camera has more to capture. So go crazy, get some Chinese lanterns or get your DJ to add your monograms to the dance floor with lights.. It all helps as you can tell below. The brighter the light the better. I know that Dj’s are often trying to dim the lights for your first and other formalities but this does not have a nice effect on the images..unless they have a cool spotlight or something of that sort. So this is something that you may want to discuss with your dj.

#6 The ring shot. One little thing that also makes a difference is ….when you are putting on your rings, please be aware that I am trying to shoot it. So tilt your hand a bit so that your audience and I can see it. It really pays off at the end and looks beautiful in your album. If we are outdoors in plenty of light I will usually get in really close and do a shot of just the hands. This looks spectacular and really adds to the story of your day.

#7 The Kiss! The kiss, the finality, the end to your gorgeous ceremony. The moment everyone waits for! So take your time Don’t rush through. I’m not saying you guys have to slobber all over each other. Just take it slow. You should probably practice. Maybe he can slow dip you or anything. Make it romantic and unique. If you take your time during the kiss it usually allows me to take a close up and a full body shot depending on the lighting situation. If it’s outdoors I can do a sequence set of more than 2-3 pictures. Make sure that you are facing your profiles towards your guests. You could put your hands on his face for part of the kiss, but please be sure that there are no arms around necks. This usually blocks the whole kiss... Not so good.

Although none of us can predict the future, it is beginning to look as if 2009 is going to be the roughest economic year in recent memory for most industries. The wedding industry, and more specifically, the wedding photography industry is no different. In fact, some would argue that our industry has been especially hard-hit by these bad economic times. From the view from my work station, It seems to me that our industry has been hit by two troubles. The economy has no doubt been a major factor in the slow-down of our industry, but I also believe that we have hit an apex in the flooding of the market with the “start-up” photographer. These two reasons together I believe, will prove to create a truly challenging market environment in the coming year.

We could sit here and discuss the reasons that caused the economy to tank, while pointing fingers at greedy lenders and irresponsible borrowers in the housing market, but that will not help us figure out how we are going to keep our doors open this year. What we do need to have a firm grip on, is that our industry, and the services and products we provide to our beloved clients are indeed luxuries and as we all know luxuries are the first thing to go out the stained-glass window when hard times come.

I myself have had numerous brides inquire about my services this year. However, getting them to sign contracts is like pulling teeth. Photographers all over the country are experiencing a bottleneck of clients who inquire, but have a hard time letting go of even the retainer fees for fear of what the economy will do next. We as Americans are fearful of what the future holds economically, and are in a “wait and see” mode with regard to feeling comfortable about spending our expendable cash. The problem is that a “wait and see” approach is the antithesis of what an economy that depends on the transfer of cash to grease the wheels of commerce, needs. However, if this were not a big enough crisis for your studio to overcome, I believe we are also seeing another major obstacle to the success of a professional photography studio. The massive influx of the aspiring photographer into the industry caused by the digital revolution.

We are indeed head-long into the digital revolution where every third person you meet is an aspiring photographer. I do not have to tell you why we are seeing so many start-up photographers everywhere we look. The digital revolution has created an environment where the average person can create a portfolio of acceptable images that they can then throw onto a free website template. Truth be told, the camera took those photos, while the upstart photographer simple pointed the camera in the correct direction. They then show this website full of images that their digital camera took to their friend’s coworker’s daughter, who herself is struggling financially during these hard times. She tells herself that this is a door that was opened for her to save some money, and she accepts the offer the photographer has made to shoot her wedding for next-to-nothing, or many times nothing at all in order to build up a portfolio of wedding images. The quality of these images is disappointingly predictable. Neither the aspiring photographer nor the bride truly realize that photography is a mixture of art and science, requiring years of training and experience to do well.

On average, I get 3-4 emails per month from aspiring photographers who are introducing themselves and offering their services free of charge in order to gain experience. Many times, the emails I receive from these aspiring photographers are not even addressed to me. I can only assume that they are copying and pasting the body of these emails into multiple emails and just sending them off in hopes that an established photographer will take them under their wings and show them the ropes. However fewer and fewer established photographers are willing to show their potential competition any sort of attention these days. They are worried more and more about their own business and its profitability in ’09, and less and less about being nice to people who are not paying them for their services.

We are beginning to see price reductions at studios all over the country. What strikes me as odd however, is that we are also hearing loud cries from photographers that these reductions in prices are “terrible for the industry” and that we’re “betraying our colleagues”, and “Unity” and “stand your ground” and so one and so forth. I can’t for the life of me understand why we as photographers think that our luxury based industry is immune to price reductions in tough economic times. Do we not notice the price tags for everything we see being slashed? Why would our services be any different? If you consider the possibility that this is the bottom of an economic cycle, and that cost bubbles correct themselves during these cycles, you can see how it’s a realistic scenario to find yourself being the one without a chair when the music stops, if you have not adjusted your pricing to an affordable amount. You could be setting yourself up to be known as the highest priced photographer in town. I don’t mean to be snide, but I hope you have the quality portfolio and the affluent client base to support that reputation. Are your clients from last year still able to afford you this year? If not, a slice of humble might actually taste good if it brings you some work.

I have noticed a trend recently in wedding photographer's web pages of trying to clear up the confusion over the various styles of wedding photography
. New names have emerged for these styles: Documentary, Illustrative, Fine Art, Classic, Contemporary, the now familiar Photojournalism and of course Traditional. Also we now hear photographers talking at length about how they only shoot weddings using "available light" and promise you that they won't use flash.

The other hot topic is the discussion of the benefits of various types of camera equipment: The advantages of full frame cameras
, or is Nikon better than Canon, etc. Much of this information has been posted to supposedly help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of all these approaches. However, when you read further, you often see that there is a slant towards the equipment or style used by that particular photographer. I recently read a web page where the photographer warned the reader to beware of wedding photographer's who still shoot weddings using the traditional approach because it obviously means that they are using outdated equipment. Huh? So what does all this tell you? The answer: Nothing!

A few months ago I attended a seminar by one of the leading wedding photographers in the country. Her input on this subject was enlightening. Although she, herself used digital capture and some film, she emphasized that what really matters is how the photographs look. Do they have impact? Do they tell the story of the day? She went on to say that she is growing tired of other photographers always asking her what type of camera she uses or what the benefits are of digital over film, etc, etc. "Lets talk about the photographs!" she exclaimed. She talked about how lucky we are in this era to have access to such great equipment and that even some of the lowest cost equipment can be used to make beautiful images.

I could not agree more. At Dubnoff Wedding Photography our philosophy is that what really matters is the end result - your wedding album. 25 years after your wedding you are not going to care if your wedding photographer used a $10,000 camera or a Kodak disposable camera. Will you remember if you hired a photojournalist or an illustrative photographer? Probably not. Its the photos that you will remember and cherish. I do use some of the most modern and up to date camera equipment, but I am not obsessed with it. I spend more of my time trying to figure out how to make the most memorable and artistic images possible. This is not accomplished by simply going out and purchasing a $1,800 lens that is so sharp that it pratically allows you to see the pores on your subject's face. Sharp, high quality lenses are important, but it is what the photographer does with them that matters. Find a photographer who talks about the images and not about how great his equipment is.

However, there are other factors important when choosing a wedding photographer. Developing rapport with your photographer is vital. A rude or bossy photographer can ruin a wedding for both the bride and groom. Look for photographers you are comfortable talking to. Make sure they can give you references and when you check those references ask how the photographer behaved at the wedding. Did he or she spend a lot of time eating food and drinking alcohol? Did he or she get along well with the guests? Calm Demeanor? Unobtrusive? Obviously, you want to make sure the photos are great, but these other factors can make or break your wedding photography experience.

Allow more time!

If time is going to be a bit tight for wedding photography later on in the day (and with demands on your attention from family, relatives and friends it usually is!) why not start getting ready earlier? Then you can make plans to have photographs with your bridesmaids, parents and other important people in your life when you've just finished getting ready. You'll be looking absolutely perfect and if you've left extra time for this you'll also have a bit of time to calm your nerves before walking out the door! Your bridesmaids and parents will especially treasure these photos with you - the last hour as a single girl!

Plan your locations in advance!

Your photographer is going to have a lot to think about on the day. Make their life easier by thinking about potential good locations for your group shots in advance. As someone who grew up as a Nantucket photographer, I've been asked numerous times for wedding photography tips, here are a few suggestions.

Create A List Of Shots.

Request or suggest to the couple to provide you with a list of shots they would like for their wedding. very helpful for family and group shots. Use An Assistant.

Shooting the family portraits can be frustrating when you have people missing and they are not organized. I recommend to bring an assistant (preferably female) to nominate a family member to gather everyone for the portraits. Stay Prepared.

Have a backup plan (in case of bad weather), have batteries charged, memory cards blank, think about routes and time to get to places and get an itinerary of the full day so you know what's happening next. If you can, attend the rehearsal of the ceremony where you'll gather a lot of great information about possible positions to shoot from, the lighting, the order of the ceremony etc.

Discuss Expectations.

With Your Bride. Show them your albums and samples of your work. Find out the style they want to achieve, how many pictures, key moments they want photographed, format of the shots ( digital, film), and more. Minimize Your Camera Noise.

Camera clicks and beeps during the vows and toasts can be distracting. Switch off sound before hand and keep it off.

Shoot With Two Cameras.

It's too easy for one camera to go down during a shoot leaving stranded with out anyways to finish your work and destroying your reputation. Buy, borrow, or rent an extra camera for the day and set it up with a different lens. I try to shoot with one wide angle lens for candid shots and tight spaces and one longer lens (it can be handy to have something as large as 200mm if you can get your hands on one - I use a 70-200mm).

Capture The Details.

Take pictures of the rings, details in the dress, eyes, lips, table settings, interior etc - these help give the end album an extra dimension. Pick up a wedding magazine at your local news stand for a little inspiration.

Having a second backup photographer can greatly facilitate the day and improve your coverage. Most importantly, it takes a little pressure off you being 'the one' to have to get every shot!

Don't Be Shy.

Being shy won't get you 'the shot'. Sometimes you need to step to the front of the line to capture a moment. However, timing is everything and planning ahead to get in the right spot for key moments are important so you don't disrupt the event. During the ceremony I try to move around at least 4-5 times but try to time this to coincide with songs, prayers or longer readings.
